Traveling to the Americas, the pilgrims expected and assumed that the ground would be great to grow crops but instead the ground was hard, rocky, and sandy soil. It took them a while to find out how to produce crops in order for them to send back to England different foods. Finally, a Native American named Squanto helped the English grow corn and show them how to plant and harvest this new man-made crop. Eventually they learned how to grow different varieties of crops such as pumpkin, squash, and potatoes. The Native Americans also taught the English how to boil maple sap into sugar to use as a sweetener.
